This painting is a repainting of my favourite Franz Hals painting, Malle Babbe, or mad Barbara, which is kept in Berlin’s Gemaeldegalerie. I have often used the strategies of appropriation in my work over the past twenty five years, and this is one of an ongoing series of repaintings of old master paintings that I admire. Sometimes it is the whole painting that I reproduce, sometimes a detail or a portion. Sometimes a detail is recontextualized.
