They include camming, full-service sex work in a variety of settings ( such as street-based, brothel work, and escorting independently online ), hostessing, phone sex, pornography, prodomme work, stripping, sugar relationships, various adult content production, and a variety of individual sexual entrepreneurship. Commercial sex markets vary widely despite the fact that the media frequently refers to sex work as "prostitution." We present data-driven stories about the state of the modern sex industries, many of which were written by current or former sex workers.

The terms" sugar daddy," a wealthy older man, and "gold digger," a poorer woman who dates or marries men for money, have challenged traditional notions of sexual respectability, particularly the notion that one shouldn't or cannot mix money with intimacy, since their introductions in the early 1920s, were first used in the 1920s. Digital" sugar dating" sites today facilitate arrangements between sugar daddies, primarily economically successful cisgender white men, or, more rarely, mamas, and the" sugar baby," typically upwardly mobile cisgender white women. In the upcoming pages, I describe the sugar relationships ' mechanics and how they contrast with traditional sex work and Julie Bells romantic dating. This chapter examines the phenomenon of sugar relationships, a form of erotic labor that scholars are only just beginning to explore, using interviews, participant observation, and qualitative analysis of US online blogs and forums. I am aware that the diversity of the participants and breadth of sugar culture are not adequately captured by the experiences of cisgender women in straight sugaring relationships. A new wave of commodified relationships is bringing together sugar relationships, like gig jobs on platforms like OnlyFans, to reshape how people think and define sex work. According to Upadhyay's groundbreaking study, about 54 % of sugar babies identified as white, which suggests some racial diversity. There was still a significant dearth of Black, Indigenous, and Asian sugar babies despite more babies being identified as mixed ( 19 % ) and Latina ( 15 % ). Sugar babies are typically younger and have fewer academic credentials than sugar daddies. My data examines sugaring from the perspective of female" sugar babies," and I focus my focus on the stories of straight, cisgender men who are called" sugar daddies" and cisgender women who are called" sugar babies" because most mainstream sugar dating sites target straight, cisgender men who are called" sugar daddies" and who are called" sugar babies. According to Srushti Upadhyay, 80 % of sugar daddies were white, educated, and wealthy ( making an average of$ 280,00 per year from income ). When questioned about what makes young people, primarily young women, want to engage in sugar relationships, they respond with the same argument as other sex workers: money. Sugar babies interpret relationships as being different from "vanilla dating," where two people date in the hope of falling in love, and escorting. Sugar workers gain from this method of stigma management, but it also refutes what sex workers refer to as "whorearchy" and "lateral whorephobia." In sex industries, both clients and employees frequently perceive full-service providers, especially those employed in street-based markets, as carrying out the most offensive work. Sex may or may not be a part of the relationship, but both parties should anticipate some sort of genuine enjoyment from it. Whether sugar relationships are just a glorified form of prostitution has become a topic of conversation among politicians, psychologists, and journalists. The recipient bestows relational benefits in the form of companionship, conversation, and sexual intimacy while the benefactor provides economic and social benefits ( which may include money, gifts, all expenses paid trips, professional advice, and networking ) and the recipient provides all expenses paid for sexual intimacy. Benefits in practice range from allowances of a few hundred to a few thousand dollars per month, gifts from an online wish list for students, network introductions, or even business capital investments.

Traditional Gendered Dating as a" Sugar Dating" ( with Benefits )

Men who have" white knight syndrome," who want to be a hero to a vulnerable woman, can follow a straightforward set of guidelines: he pays, and she smiles and flatters him. Because they are already responsible for their families, wives, and children, she thought sugar daddies were more "giving" and accommodating. According to Upadhyay, the women I spoke with were primarily young, cisgender, white women who were attracted to the social, cultural, and economic benefits sugar daddies might offer and who perceived sexual chemistry as a pleasant but unnecessary element of the relationship.
